Dirty Socks for Mother’s Day? Yes, Please.

IMG_3195The middle one caught me in the hall the other day and without any pomp and circumstance, handed me a pair of rainbow-colored socks. He smiled as they exchanged owners and he informed me, days early, that this would, in fact, be considered my Mother’s Day gift.

They came with pre-existing conditions. And stipulations.

First of all, they were his. Purchased, owned, beloved. They were favorites but he handed them over anyway. They were also dirty. And inside-out. And they were a short-term loan, due back in 2-3 months.

I love them.

There’s something, something, in a gift that appears to the world to be used-up or worthless. A gift from the heart–the simple kind–that requires real looking and seeing to know its value. Those are the gifts that fill me. It’s the candy given from the precious stashes, the lukewarm coffee brought to my bedside, the affectionate words written with misspelled words, the colorful crafts decorated by tiny hands with unique fingerprints and big ideas.

Truly, truly. Priceless gifts.

The socks? At first glance, they were a simple gesture in a stolen hallway moment. But they are more than that. They remind me of the fabric of this motherhood thing. Dirty, smelly, yes. But these boys, all lanky legs and growing before my eyes? They are my personal, God-given, wild journey–repositioners of my heart–now outside and exposed and tender. They are the catalysts for turning me inside-out, in the best possible way. And beyond what this mother-heart can fathom, they are on loan from their Precious Owner, who loves them more than me. Impossible. Yet true.

My, my, my. Those dirty, inside-out, rainbow-colored socks. A big, big gift that I will treasure always. Or until they are repossessed in 2-3 months, whichever comes first.
